This latest High Artistry release, A Journey on the Orient Express, translates the opulent history of this historic long-distance train into an artistic design.

Patron of Art

Each year since 1992, Montblanc has honored an influential patron of arts and culture with a dedicated fountain pen. This series of pens emphasizes the belief that the arts must have dedicated patrons in order to flourish, and thus each pen features designs inspired by the figures they commemorate.

In the case of this year’s edition, the company pays tribute to the remarkable couple Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with a pen inspired by their early years together. The Homage to Victoria and Albert Limited Edition 4810 features a barrel crafted in pearl white lacquer, a colour associated with purity and youth. The cap carries the Victorian pattern found on their sceptre and is topped by a cone inspired by their love of uniting their initials. The fittings are plated in champagne-tone gold and the Montblanc emblem is engraved on the cap crown.

The second major theme in this year’s collection is based on the famous works of the great British satirist Jonathan Swift, whose most famous work was “Gulliver’s Travels”. This year, Montblanc has released a pen with a black precious resin barrel, shaped to resemble the tricorn hat worn by Gulliver and accented with multi-layered inlays resembling the ropes used to bind him. Leo Tolstoy is celebrated in a pen inspired by his estate Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy’s philosophy of living the simple life of a peasant is reflected by the design, which depicts the characteristic pillars at the entrance to the estate.

Great Characters

In the digital age, one might wonder if pens are still relevant. But for many, the Montblanc brand is more than just a pen - it’s an icon. It’s a status symbol that inspires dreams, attracts awe and becomes the pride of every owner. It’s a name that has been recognized and worn by influential people like world leaders, celebrities and royalty. It’s also a name that is expensive, as it’s a luxury brand that only sells its products at select authorized retailers, restricting supply and making the Montblanc logo more coveted.

Montblanc’s heritage dates back to 1906 when the company was founded as the Simplo Filler Pen Company in Hamburg, Germany. The initial designs by German designer August Eberstein and banker Alfred Nehemias created a range of simple-to-use fountain pens called the “Simplicissimus”. These were designed to not leak and included a built-in ink well. The name was then changed to Montblanc in 1909, inspired by the highest European mountain, and the famous star emblem that adorns all Meisterstuck caps was introduced.

In 2009, Montblanc began the Great Characters collection as a tribute to outstanding historical personalities and their dedications with special edition writing instruments. Each pen is an homage to the unique personality of the celebrated figure that is commemorated. The latest addition to the collection is a special edition dedicated to legendary actor James Dean.

Writers Edition

Montblanc Limited Edition pens are more than just a writing instrument; they are an expression of personality and a monument to culture. This claim is reflected year after year in the Writers Edition line that pays tribute to great figures of world literature. The series, which is available as fountain pens, rollerballs or ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils, consists of a limited number of models that are produced for one year only. The tools necessary for production are then destroyed and no further pens are made with the same design.

The pens are crafted of precious materials and are designed to reflect the personalities of their famous subjects. In the 2020 model, Victor Hugo is celebrated with a design that reflects the Gothic architecture of Notre-Dame de Paris and its characters including Quasimodo, the protagonist of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The cap is fashioned from black precious resin and features a pattern reminiscent of the wood panels in his home. The finely engraved 18-karat gold nib is shaped like a gargoyle, a nod to Hugo's best-known novel.

The Homage to Brothers Grimm is dedicated to Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and their research into German and European folk tales such as Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. The design of the pen reflects the woods and branches that serve as a backdrop for many of the stories. The black precious resin is adorned with waves that are inspired by Rapunzel's hair and also evoke roots, reflecting the way in which the Brothers Grimm viewed their linguistic research as searching for origins.

Year of the Golden Dragon

Since 1992 Montblanc Limited Edition has celebrated patrons of art with a line dedicated to them each spring. The collection focuses on patrons who have shaped culture with their dedication to art and culture in the past centuries and their work. Each edition is individually designed and hand-engraved in sterling silver to pay homage to the ancient symbols that inspired them.

For 2021, the year of the Ox, Montblanc created a special edition inspired by this majestic creature. The writing instrument is engraved with a fine representation of the animal’s face, while the cap crown is adorned with a diamond, which is an important number for Chinese people as it symbolizes wealth and good fortune.

This year, Montblanc also released a fountain pen with the Mer de Glace dragon lying on top of the iconic mountain of Mont Blanc to celebrate its beauty and power. It is the third of the collection from Meisterstuck Around the World in 80 Days, a tribute to Jules Verne’s classic novel that describes Phileas Fogg’s quest to win a bet by travelling around the globe in only eighty days.

In the High Artistry series, Montblanc pushes its craftsmanship to the limits of creativity and technical virtuosity to tell the stories of history’s great characters. For example, the Homage to Beethoven Limited Edition 3 features a portrait of the composer in solid gold on a black lacquer base and a musical clef on the clip, all embellished with diamonds.
